When Change Comes
Most people, I gather, resist change. We get into a mode or a routine and grow accustomed to it and when something goes awry with that, we get a little ruffled, miffed even. I have seen this in the workplace, at home, in relationships with other people, and in my 0wn relationships. Until, sometimes, it falls to pieces and we are forced to deal with the changes that come. I think it carries over into many areas, and is the reason why people are afraid to do things differently, or to try something new. It’s the reason why people can have the same hair (or not, ha ha!) for years and you can recognize them instantly at a class reunion. “You haven’t changed!”, people will say to each other. Good? Sometimes…not always. I posted a picture I took of my daughter’s friend and her family on Facebook this morning, and she left a comment saying, “I look like crap!” How can anyone that is sixteen or seventeen years old, with the dew so fresh on their face, even comprehend the beauty of their youth? Haven’t lived long enough is what I say. But I left her with the quote from the song “Jack and Diane” by John Cougar Mellencamp, “Hold on to sixteen as long as you can, changes come around real soon makin’ us women and men.” Change is inevitable, and a part of life. Rainer Maria Rilke in an excerpt from his poem, “Sonnets To Orpheus, Part II, XII”, says the following: Want the change Be inspired by the flame Where everything shines as it disappears What locks itself in sameness has congealed. Is it safer to be gray and numb? What turns hard becomes rigid and is easily shattered. It was hard for me to adjust to the changes of caring for my mom. But those changes necessitated my growing up, taking a long hard look at my own life. The changes of grieving your ailing parent are the kind of cleansing to the soul that make you assess what you really want from it. Now that the Honolulu Advertiser and Star Bulletin may be merging, the changes that come with that may mean this blog will become obsolete. I am thankful for having had the opportunity to write it
