New Dads Suffer from Post Natal Depression

While it is always a joy to see a baby enter your family, it seems that this is short-lived. As far as this study is concerned, new dads (not moms) suffer from post natal depression three to six months after their new child is born. The rate of “baby blues” is lower than that of mothers but it seems that when dad’s have to deal with lack of sleep and new responsibilities, the realities of being a father starts to kick in and provide depression all the more. Dr James Paulson and Sharnail Bazemore, who carried out the study, said more efforts should be made to improve screening and referral of at-risk fathers, particularly as mounting evidence suggests that early paternal depression may have substantial emotional, behavioural and developmental effects on children.
