World Sleep Day

Just in case you missed it, yesterday was World Sleep Day. Sponsored by the World Association of Sleep Medicine, this event was meant to raise awareness on sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea. More than 1/3 of adults suffer from sleep disorders and much of this was addressed at this event. For the sleep-deprived, here are some 10 Commandments of Sleep Hygiene shared. They may sound simple but check them out because you may have missed some of them in your daily routine. Fix a bedtime and an awakening time. Limit daytime naps to 30-45 minutes. Avoid excessive alcohol 4 hours before bedtime and do not smoke. Avoid caffeine 6 hours before bedtime. This includes coffee, tea and many sodas, as well as chocolate. Avoid heavy, spicy, or sugary foods 4 hours before bedtime. A light snack before bed is acceptable. Exercise regularly, but not right before bed. Use comfortable bedding. Find a comfortable temperature setting for sleeping and keep the room well ventilated.
