Well, Don’t That Beet All

Ever since you were diagnosed with high blood pressure, you’ve been hoping that researchers would suddenly discover a food or beverage that could combat your condition simply by being swallowed. You would love a magic drink, to be consumed once in the morning and once in the evening, that would set your cardiovascular system right. And really, it’s not too much to ask, is it? Not at all, and to prove it, researchers have done just that. They have found the drink that will lower your blood pressure with two glasses a day: beet juice!! After giving 14 healthy volunteers either two cups of beet juice or water, researchers noted that the juice-drinkers experienced lower cholesterol after just one hour. After 3 hours, their blood pressure was at an all-time low, a level that lasted for 24 hours. Isn’t that great news? Absolutely, except for one thing . . . beet juice isn’t exactly what you were thinking. You were imagining a chocolate shake, an enchanted cup of coffee or, at the very least, a smoothie or juice that was comprised of fruits and vegetables you actually, um, liked. You can’t even handle it when beets are put on the table. How are you expected to drink them twice daily? You aren’t, so long as you do the other things necessary for managing your blood pressure . Start by talking and listening to your doctor. Take the medication he prescribes and follow the instructions he gives you. Then, get off of your beet-hating butt, and get exercising. Go for a jog around the block. When you return, you can reward yourself with a healthy snack or nutritious meal. Have something that involves lots of fruits and vegetables and limited amounts of sodium
